The purpose of this project is to use experimental results from the Architectural Institute of Japan to validate CFD results gained from SimScale. The case being validated is Case E, which consists a complex of buildings with simplified geometry. Many scenarios are presented in Case E, The scenarios used to validate the SimScale platform were the North, East, South and Westerly winds for the after construction scenario.

The SimScale CFD results were compared to the experimental results and found to have good correlation. Some underprediction was seen in the k-epsilon models in the strong wind regions and underprediction in the wake regions, but is a known trait of the K-epsilon model and is acceptable and should be considered when evaluating results.

This project takes a standard grasshopper model used to demonstrate outdoor thermal comfort, to demonstrate how to import SimScale Results back into the grasshopper engine for visualization and calculation purposes such as calculating UTCI.

The objective of this simulation is to demonstrate how to prepare a geometry with extreme terrain (mountainous area) and then simulate it in the PWC analysis type.

Accurate wind pressure coefficients in thermal modelling software (building performance modelling) are critical to evaluating several key design outputs on buildings. The greatest impact of inaccurate wind pressure coefficients will be on the calculation of airflow through openings and thus ventilation, fresh air rates, cooling and overheating assessments can all be adversely affected. Most standard energy/thermal software has an oversimplified treatment of wind pressure which is also poorly understood and applied by software users. 

SimScale can quickly and accurately calculate transient wind flows and pressures around buildings and on building facades. These can be used as in input into energy/thermal software for more accurate building performance modelling.

The geometry was modified for simulation purposes which may or may not have introduced inaccuracies. Fundamentally the modification was extending the topology and modification to topology. Additionally some surfaces had gaps, these were closed by moving some faces.

HVAC Design Project with open windows to understand how the air might flow through the buildings

The aim of this project is to showcase how SimScale Platform could be used to perform CFD Analysis to optimize cooling cost of a Data Center.

The CAARC building is a validation case that has for many years been used to validate CFD codes. This case has been shown in the past validating both URANS and LES turbulence models, where the trend has been that RANS/URANS has predicted the windward facade well but not predicted the sides and Leeward facades. In contrast, LES has shown a good agreement with experimental results, however, there is still in general, an over-prediction for the sides and leeward facade, and a worse prediction on the windward facade. In this project we look at SimScales LBM implementation, PaceFish from Numeric Systems, and how well it performs using Hybrid models, K-omega SST DDES, and k-omega SST IDDES models. These models use wall models based upon K-omega SST but then transition to the highly accurate LES model further from the wall.

This project aims to demonstrate the use of porous media, using known pressure loss curves to model an object (balcony railings in this case) as porous media, showing a comparison between modelled pressure loss in the Lattice Boltzmann Method, and demonstrating its application in Pedestrian Wind Comfort Analysis.

Electronic cooling is a vastly important topic, as failure to sufficiently cool a component within a system will lead to overheating, reducing the component's lifespan or in severe cases damaging the component.

Water cooling is a great option for higher power application, and this webinar will demonstrate how CFD can be used to ensure that there is sufficient cooling, and how to ensure its efficiency within a system.

The objective of this simulation is to show how CFD can be used to predict the flow from a ceiling fan in an indoor space in steady-state.  This can be used to demonstrate capability, or as a template for more complex problems in HVAC design.

The geometry used was the scaled geometry from the data file provided by the Architectural Institute of Japan, and measurements were taken at points also listed in the data file.
